That obscure country north of the border...

"Canadians are healthier and have better access to health care than U.S. residents. And, according to a new study, Canadians obtain better care for half of what Americans spend on their medical system." CTV News

Not only that but, thanks largely to the Liberal Government under Chretien:

"The [Canadian] federal government has posted a whopping $12-billion budget surplus for the fiscal year that ended March 31 [2006]." Shaw News

Compare this to the U.S. Deficit of 8.4 trillion dollars. Methinks the US has to consider electing a president and a party who can put the economic stability of the country first, even risking electoral consequences to do it. And, Americans, do something about your national health care!

  1. About 20 years ago or so I was giving a talk at the University in Manitoba and was riding around the town on the bus, when I saw one of your "Loonie" dollar coins. When I remarked how beautiful the coin was my fellow passenger got upset as she did not like the coin at all.

I pointed out to her that putting a loon on a coin is much better than putting one in the White House. Clearly we have had several since my original comment.

  2. MB... (o)

Paul, in 1981 our deficit was $1.03 billion, and that was a superficial google search... leadership is crucial. Chretien was a guy who was for this country, and his legacy is amazing.

The States can re-balance economically, and in other sectors. It happened here, it can happen there.

Only the point is to stay in the black once it's achieved.

Thanks for visiting and for your insightful input.

I like that loonie joke a lot!

  3. It is amazing what actual leadership can do. Almost the entire US deficit has been caused by three U.S. presidents, Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II. All the social spending from FDR to Jimmy Carter didn't add up to 1/4 of Reagan's 8 year debt. And, of course, Clinton put the government back into at least annual surplus in just 5 years. U.S. Republicans aren't just immoral fascists, they are the worst fiscal managers the world has ever seen. Luckily for them they run for office in a nation dominated by uneducated religious fanatics.
